Wine imports to Mexico from Spain

Wine imports to Mexico: without a doubt, the wine sector has gained ground when it comes to the consumption of alcoholic beverages in Mexico.

The average of wine consumption per Mexican increased from 450 millimiters in 2012 to 960 millimiters in 2018. Therefore, the industry is in search of increasing the wine consumption to 3 liters in the next 10 – 15 years. For 2018, from the total demand in Mexico, 2.1 million boxes of  75cl 12 bottles in Mexican wineries. This represents 29.3% of the sales. On the other hand, 5.1 million wine boxes were imported, representing 70.6% of Mexico’s market.

The export of Spanish wines to Mexico in 2019 grew 12.5% with 26.5 million liters.

As for the types of wine, the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) ones imported from Spain almost came to 45 million euro. However, the bottled wines with no PDO reached 14 million euro. With regard to the unbottled ones, the number rose to 3.2 million euro.

At the same time, the selling of sparkling wines to the Aztec country generated 3.9 million euro and the rest, 2.4 million. On the other hand, the average price of the Spanish wine in Mexico shrank 13.1% making 2.58 euro per liter.

In 2019, wine imports to Mexico from Spain increased 6.5%. Although the average price decreased 13.6%, besides reducing its billing an 8%. This gave as a result an average price of €1.27/liter.

The increase of the volume, however, was lead by wines with no certificate and unpacked. This means 135.6 million liters more.

The main imported wines sold in Mexico com from Spain (21.7%), Argentina (15.3%), France (11.5%), Chile (11.1%), United States (9.7%) and Italy (8.5%). Having these countries altogether, it is more than 75% of the Mexican imports market (data from June 2015 to June 202).
